Layney is a super cool 7 year old Boston Terrier who sports a light up LED vest. She has a lot of personality and you could say her owners, Walt and Linda Kersten, dote on her just a little bit. When Layney became paralyzed in her hind end last August, they came to Dr. Jim Carlson, owner of Riverside Animal Clinic in McHenry and Grove Animal Hospital & Holistic Center in Buffalo Grove, for treatment using the clinic’s many holistic offerings.
“Dr. Carlson is unlike most other vets. Other vets always push for the money instead of caring for the pets. But Dr. Carlson said let’s not even go down that road, let’s try acupuncture, aquapuncture and cold laser,” said Mr. Kersten.
Layney’s treatment included acupuncture, aquapuncture and cold laser treatments for six weeks. “Acupuncture allows a doctor to treat a wide range or problems. And with the loss of use of the back legs, the alternatives are typically surgery or euthanasia. I have been able to stabilize and completely restore a dog to full use of their legs in dozens of cases with holistic means at a fraction of the cost of surgery and without the painful recovery of an invasive spinal surgery,” said Dr. Carlson.
It took a month for her to feel back to normal with full use of her legs. “It’s like night and day,” said Mr. Kersten. Now Layney is in a maintenance program of treatment every 2 or 3 months.
